BOOK REVIEW : VOYAGERS INTO THE UNKNOWN BY RUCHIRA KHANNA.

Picture
Picture
In the historic Indian town of Agra, you can find a very unusual tour company, which is owned by a charming young man named Raj. Although Raj's official job is to show off the historical landmarks of Agra, including the legendary Taj-Mahal, his true mission is to heal the souls of his broken "birds," as he affectionately refers to his tour participants.

His business operates purely upon word-of-mouth referrals, ensuring that all of his tour members arrive in Agra with their hearts in their hands, ready for the spiritual growth and cleansing that Raj is known to provide. Healing the hearts of the spiritually damaged can be a difficult job, and in this particular tale, Raj finds himself faced with his most challenging tour group yet.

First, there is Ira, a stunningly gorgeous but fragile young woman on the brink of suicide. Next, we meet Darci and Lennard, a couple on the verge of divorce.
Then there is Carl, an irritable, antisocial workaholic who has burned all of his bridges.

Lastly, we meet Asha, an elderly widow who still yearns for the company and comfort of her late husband.

When disaster strikes the tour group, everything is thrown into jeopardy, including lives, relationships, and Raj's very reputation as a tour guide. Raj must find a way to lift the spirits of these five special travelers, even in the face of death and despair. Venture into the unknown and discover how Raj Touristry heals the brokenhearted, one soul at a time.

My Views:

VOYAGERS INTO THE UNKNOWN is a unique story (my first of this genre) and a compelling story. 5 foreigners come to Agra not just for sight seeing but also to transform their lives. It is their journey of discovery of self along with discovering new people and new places.

Raj who runs ‘Raj Touristry,’ promises his ‘birds’ as he calls them that the trip will change their lives forever. True to his words, with the unexpected turn of events, his clients leave India changed…forever.

This is a fast paced story, which gives us a quick glimpse into the lives of the travelers, their cause of worry the emotional hang ups and baggage’s they have in their lives which is hindering their progress as an individual and living life to the fullest.

The tragedy that strikes, the life that is lost, an irreparable damages caused in a relationship, some bridges crossed, new friendships forged, the guilt and the regret, finally moving on…this story is high on emotional roller coaster ride.

I also liked this story because of the little nuggets of wisdom thrown here and there. This is done so subtlety that it does not sound preachy.

Ruchira has done a very good job. Liked the way the she has conceived the story and executed it.
I do like to mention that sometimes the story moves at a lightening speed as if the author is in a hurry to close that chapter or the story of a particular character.

Picture
In a way Ruchira has outdone herself in this. There is a steep improvement in terms of narration and the character building. Also she has grown as a writer. For each one of us out there, I am sure we will resonate atleast with one character from this story.
Ruchira Khanna comes up with another tale touching another aspect of humanity; empathy and compassion.
Can philosophy change a person’s perception or her/his outlook in life?
Serious questions raised but then this kind of books makes you ponder, question your belief and something which I sincerely doubt I can ever do in my life – forgive and move on.

BOOK REVIEW OF ENCOUNTERS BY SUMANA KHAN.

Encounters
Someone's Always Waiting
by
Sumana Khan

Blurb
ENCOUNTERS is a potpourri of five sumptuous stories involving a motley crew of protagonists. Skating along the borders of fantasy and paranormal themes, the stories track incredible and poignant journeys of self-discovery, tracing the cathartic aftermath of fleeting encounters.

MY REVIEW -

Sumana’s books are a sensory treat. Having read The Revenge of Kaivalya, my expectations were high with Encounters and I was not disappointed. In fact my daughter and me were fighting to read this book first.

FIRST LOVE is about a 32-year-old India’s youngest award winning forensic analyst, Dr. Ratnaveni. This story emphasizes the fact that your education, professional qualification and social standing does not mean a thing if you are not married ‘at the right age,’ the typical mindset of the middle class parents in India.

Ratna, unknowingly falls in love with Vrka – a myth, an animal or the creation of her hallucinating mind!

Ratna, after her graduation is engaged to be married to Surya, who stays abroad and is well to do only in terms of money but as a person he is a typical male who has a pervert satisfaction to have found a virgin bride for himself which actually arouses him.

This story is a fast paced thriller and even in the end we are groping for answers whether it is a fantasy or the projection of Ratna’s hallucination.

Some words that touched me the most –

My truth? My parents perceive me as an extra piece of luggage that must be given away. On account of my gender.”

Not once had anyone tried to understand how important this was to me. But I was not surprised. I had learnt to accept this passive sidelining from a very young age. I had also learnt to be resourceful-to make the best movements possible with my shackles on.”

Isn’t this the truth of almost all the females in our country?

THE STORYTELLER had me spellbound. If not for the introduction of the granite bench at the beginning of the story, I would not have guessed the outcome. It is so engrossing that I too was carried along with the tsunami of emotions. It is like one of those ghost stories that we all heard from some elder in the family as kids. Only that you will not believe as to who the storyteller is!

I’m an agarbatti salesman. I know it does not sound very…what do you say...prestigious. Boss, let me tell you one thing – your software – geeftware, finance – ginance, everything can do a Titanic.” This made me laugh…the simplicity and authenticity of the language.

REMINISCENCE is such a sweet love story between an elderly couple. It is a story about the little pleasures of life, of important milestones and of memories attached to things and how we cling to them. The story reminds us of a time when even neighbours were family and everyone celebrated and rejoiced with each other and also mourned and helped each other as their own.

You can afford many curtains. But this saree was gifted by Deepu. He bought it with his first pay, remember? How can I throw it away? You had bought that bangle set to match the saree? So many good memories no?”

This was how we attached value to things long after they had served their purpose.  Coming from a background like this, I can easily identify with the characters and story. So what is about this story? Don’t let the narrator surprise you.

HAPPINESS CLINIC is about an elderly gentleman Sheshadri who has retired from work and is trying to figure out the life and people around him and hopelessly failing to do so.  He did have his own plans as to how he would spend his time after retirement but he did not have any idea about what his wife or the immediate family wanted to follow his plan. Now after two years of retirement he was reduced to an irritating snob. And then he is introduced to his true self when he comes across the Happiness Clinic and meets his namesake or you can say his alter ego.

What follows is the realization that his wife Sharada is well-educated person who has an immense potential in teaching and changing the course of lives of the students whom she taught.

BEST FRIENDS FOREVER is a para-normal experience with a dash of history thrown in. Prerna is a bubbly young girl whose childhood had been greatly scared by the abuse from her grandmother. And it was Alice who becomes Prerna’s best friend and solace at that time. Is Alice real or is she just an imaginary friend of Prerna? To find out, read this story that is an emotional roller coaster ride.

What makes Sumana’s stories endearing is the usage of colloquial language. It blends in seamlessly into the dialogues that you can only smile at their usage.
Here are some examples -

Pammi and withdrawn? Never. Once she starts talking , uff! You will bow before her and beg for one minute’s silence. She has so many friends…always they want Pammi. Movie means Pammi…wedding means Pammi…”

“Lot of people worked in the Karaikal port from all these areas. So heavy traffic. The distance is just tonty…tonty-five kilometres. But the buses would stop for every waving hand, stretching the forty-minute journey to one and half hours.”

Just pick up the book and read it…totally worth it!

SPOTLIGHT - A DOG EAT DOG-FOOD WORLD BY C.SURESH

A Dog Eat Dog-Food World
by
C. Suresh
A Fablery Publications

Blurb

A hilarious pseudo-history of marketing management, which explicitly denies resemblance to any actual history, and which will be horrified if some semblance be found. ‘A dog eat dog-food world’ is the story of a man who discovered that the path of life is strewn with treadmills and, if you get on one by mistake, you could keep running all your life to stay in the same place. The story of how just minding your own business can lead to unexpected consequences, guided by the ‘invisible hand’ of long dead economists. Anything you learn from the book – be it the basics of marketing management or a satirical view of Society – you do at your own risk.

The tale only dogs the doings of Spike Fortune who only sought to feed dogs and Jerry Fortune who, being fortuneless, gets dragged helter-skelter by his uncle Spike’s careening pursuit of commercial success; Spike’s rival Tom Rich, who is unwillingly dragged into upstaging Spike and tries to do it by teasing the palates of cats, helped by the bumbling efforts of his nephew, Jasper Rich who would rather be chasing girls than chasing cats.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Fiction has been an addiction but the need to make a living took Suresh through Chemical Engineering and a PGDM at IIM-Bangalore and, from thence, to a long 16 year stint in the area of finance with specific expertise in fertilizer subsidies and a further two years as consulting expert in the same area. That, in his words, about sums up the boring part of his life, except for the people he was privileged to meet.

Otherwise, he can be described as a mess of contradictions – a bookworm but avid trekker; alone but never lonely; enjoys solitude but loves company; lazy but a perfectionist, the litany is endless. Trekking, which side-tracked him from the writing for which he quit his job, is a major passion and he does, at least, one trek in the Himalayas every year in addition to numerous local treks.

He reignited his passion for writing with a fairly popular blog www.jambudweepam.blogspot.in. The blog has been rated among the Top 5 humour blogs in India, twice in succession - in 2014 and 2015 - by BlogAdda, and has also been listed third among the Top Humour Blogs by Baggout.

He also has a short story published in a collection “Uff Ye Emotions” and has edited and written a novelette in an ebook anthology “Sirens spell danger”

AN AUTOGRAPH FOR ANJALI BY SUNDARI VENKATRAMAN - BOOK REVIEW.

AN AUTOGRAPH FOR ANJALI
by
Sundari Venkatraman

Blurb

Jayant Mathur is found murdered in his bed, shot at point-blank range with his own revolver. Though she’s extremely disturbed by his death, Jayant’s wife Anjali is way more upset about something else. Who stands to gain by killing the multi-millionaire businessman?

Parth Bhardwaj is a friend and neighbour of the Mathurs. Parth is an author who goes by a pseudonym. He appears more than a friend to Anjali; while he’s also on good terms with her son Arjun who lives and studies in the UK. What role does he play in Anjali’s life? Jayant’s relatives are curious to know.

Jayant’s brother-in-law Rana is convinced that Parth and Anjali are the murderers. But Inspector Phadke has his own doubts about this theory. In comes Samrat, the private detective who appears as quiet as a mouse. Will he be able to find the murderer?

Will Anjali find happiness and peace?
My Review -

An Autograph for Anjali is a nice deviation from the ‘usual’ Sundari’s novels. Sundari is exploring different storyline for her novels these days, which is commendable.  Her previous book was about widow remarriage and this is a thriller…but of course with romance as its main ingredient.

The story starts off with a murder and the first few chapters keep you really hooked with suspense and tension building up. The chapters following are about the life of Anjali who is trapped in a loveless marriage to a well-to-do businessman Jayanth who is selfish to the core. Anjali has an ally in her son Arjun and then she finds love in Parth, a well-known author.
It is about Anjali’s journey fighting inner turmoil of staying loyal to her otherwise disloyal husband, of being a perfect rich wife and daughter-in-law, a good mother who otherwise has no life to call her own.

Then enters Parth and her world turns upside down. She falls in love and then realizes the importance of living life for her own self.

The characters are relatable, especially Anjali…as the story progressed I felt I knew Anjali all my life. Jayanth is the typical snobbish businessman who can think only of himself. And Parth…I have been dreaming about him.

What I did not like –
Though Jayanth is a typical misogynist, he should at least have an idea about why a person needs to see a psychiatrist or a counselor. He is a very successful businessman who was working with women in high position, he may not think very high of them but I would have liked if he displayed some emotion of understanding his women. He had used women to fulfill his needs but would have credited a bit more intelligence to him. It is typical of the way he handled his affair with Seema…he is ruthless that way.

Arjun, Anjali and Jayanth’s 19-year-old son is Anjali’s ally and confidant. More than sharing a mother and son relationship, they were friends. He is aware of the loveless marriage between their parents and he completely supports his mother when he comes to know about her feelings for Parth. What I did not like was, whatever his level of maturity but as long as his parents were living in the same house and not divorced, how could he agree to allow Parth to travel with his mother. He did share a good relationship with his dad after all. This was a bit difficult to digest.

Verdict –
A good, racy read. I would have liked if the ending was a bit more complex as gripping as the start.
